'E-writing: from web pages to emails' provides instruction on writing electronic publications, including Internet and intranet pages, CD-ROMs and emails. This course is based on guidelines used within government organisations such as the Commonwealth Style Manual and the Yale Web Style Guide.

The E-writing course provides information on and practice in writing

  • the three key electronic styles for web pages and
    CD-ROMs
  • successful and appropriate emails
  • information enabling a reader to scan non-linearly
  • concise hyperlinked text
  • text that follows non-discriminatory principles

Please note that this course does not cover markup languages such as HTML or XML.

Intended participants
Government employees who write text content for electronic documents published via the Internet, an intranet, CD-ROM and email.

Special requirements
This course will be conducted in electronic and paper formats. Participants are encouraged to use their own laptop computers during the course and they will be provided with a CD-ROM workbook. They will also receive a printed handbook which, alone, will be sufficient for them to complete the course successfully.

'E-writing: from web pages to emails' introduces and develops the thinking and writing skills required to create text content for electronic publications.

Objectives
The objectives of the 'E-writing' course are to help e-writers

  • to follow Australian public sector and international guidelines and conventions when producing electronic documents

  • to create effective Link Language

  • to write powerful Attractor Style text

  • to develop coherent and readable Provider Style text for information and interaction

  • to assess statistically the writing on electronic pages to develop writing standards and benchmarks

  • to chunk messages in a way that helps readers to scan effectively

  • to identify key points and summarise complex material

  • to write concise hyperlinked text

  • to write clear and logical emails following appropriate the Australian public
    sector style

  • to use the resources available to e-writers

  • to develop skills relating to non-discriminatory accessibility and other standards and guidelines

  • to learn about e-readers’ behaviour, electronic design and writing issues,
    e-language, emoticons, and writing standards
